Alan, Hansen and young Arabella climbed the stairs to the makeshift platform in the middle of the square. The crowd’s cheers accompanied them as they paraded their tokotas around before ordering them to sit before the long table the judges had set. On the table were dozens of pies stacked in towers.
“Whoa, boy. Not yet.” Alan pulled Wendigo’s halter back as the huge dire yeti made a grab for one of the nearest pies.
The crowd laughed. One of the judges stepped forward holding a flash card and a microphone. He tried to speak but the device did not work.
“Great. Technical difficulties. Hurry up!” Arabella complained. Her foot tapped the floor swiftly and her tokota, Rathian, matched her with his tail.
“Settle down, grump. Or are you that eager to lose?” The redheaded man teased.

Over the Hedge Nanook was snoozing quietly on the front porch of the house, having claimed the sunny spot for himself upon arriving an hour earlier. Kelle sat beside him gently scratching the top of his head between his ears. She was impressed by the Tokota’s age but otherwise still unaware of his prowess; the effect he had on some of the others was very apparent however making the rookie handler very curious about him. Saffael seemed to be staring at the elder male with a sort of reverence, but he and his five companions were all careful to avoid looking him in the eye whenever they were opened; Saren had an easier time avoid the starter’s gaze, simply having to keep from tossing his mane from his eyes. The woman had noticed the old Tokota was blind and so thought that was strange, but did not have time to ask before Hal appeared.
